The Art Gallery of Ballarat was established in 1884 and is the one of Australia's finest provincial art galleries. 

The gallery possesses the largest and most comprehensive collection of Australian art of all regional galleries. The original 1890 building is on the Heritage Register has been over the 20th century to accommodate the display of the permanent collection as well as a series of temporary exhibition spaces.

The gallery also houses the Lindsay Family sitting room and a large number or works by the five Lindsay artists. Since 1895 the Ballarat Fine Art Gallery has been home to the original flag from the 1854 Eureka Stockade. The flag is one of Australia’s most important historical relics and is displayed in its own gallery alongside a changing display of goldfields related artwork.
