Southern Ocean coastline
Victoria's coastline with the Southern Ocean extends from the border with South Australia to Cape Otway.
Discovery Bay Coastal Park, in the far south-west corner of Victoria, protects the natural beauty and heritage of the coastline. Features of this part of the coast include:
- freshwater lakes
- massive dune systems
- magnificent coastal cliffs
- volcanic features
- sweeping ocean beaches.
Highlights of Discovery Bay Coastal Park at Cape Bridgewater include a seal colony, blowholes, the ‘petrified forest’ and the highest coastal cliffs in Victoria, 130 metres above sea level.
The western section of the Great Ocean Road forms part of this coastline, renowned for its diverse and spectacular scenery. The sheer limestone cliffs, Twelve Apostles and structures of Port Campbell National Park are popular attractions. The rocky coastline intermittently gives way to sandy coves and beaches, with a backdrop of the dense forest areas of the Otway Ranges.
