Four-wheel driving – High Country
Head off the highway and explore some of the best 4WD areas Australia has to offer, with an endless number of tracks available that vary from easy to extremely difficult. And if you don’t have your own 4WD, one of the many tour operators will provide you with a hassle free adventure and one or two adventure stories of their own. Even motorbike trail riding tours are available.
The Alpine National Park stretches from Walhalla in Victoria’s south-east to Canberra, Australia's capital city, and is an excellent place to spend a weekend, a week or even a month four-wheel driving.
Drive yourself:
Alpine National Park to Mt Stirling
Grade: Medium to difficult (dry weather only)
Distance from Melbourne: 250 kilometres (approximately)
Thanks to its appearance as a location in the film 'The Man from Snowy River', Craig’s Hut at Mt Stirling has become the most visited cattlemen hut in High Country. The drive to Craig’s Hut is worth it for the views, but the trip to the summit is slightly technical with the track at times becoming quite rocky, so carry recovery gear.
Mirimbah return via Craig’s Hut, Mt Stirling Summit and Howqua Gap Hut
Grade: Medium to difficult (dry weather only)
Distance from Melbourne: 24 kilometres
Pineapple Flat to Craig’s Hut return
Grade: Medium (river crossings) (dry weather only)
