A few kilometres south of Ballarat, the picturesque town of Buninyong was the site of one of the region’s earliest gold rushes. The streets are lined with many of the town’s original buildings, well preserved and still open for business. Neighbouring Mt Buninyong, an extinct volcano, is a popular for its walking tracks and abundance of scenic views.

- Visit Ballarat Bird World, one of Australia’s largest displays of parrots and cockatoos
- Visit the Buninyong Botanical Gardens, one of the oldest in Australia
- Drop in on the one of the local artists and galleries such as the Clayfire Gallery with selected jewellery paintings and glassware all made on site or the Paper Threads Gallery with beautiful hand-made craft
- Spend some time in Buninyong Books, with its vast collection of titles, or check on local history in the next door visitor centre and old library

How to get there
Buninyong is just over an hour from Melbourne on the Midland Highway. Daily bus services are available from Ballarat.
