The village of Point Lonsdale overlooks The Rip – the notorious entrance to Port Phillip Bay where ocean and bay waters collide through an outlet only a kilometre wide, creating one of the world’s most dangerous stretches of water.
Take in the dramatic views from high points along the ocean foreshore, swim at a beautiful sheltered bay beach with a pleasant foreshore reserve with picnic and barbecue facilities. Learn about local history with a visit to the famous lighthouse, or Buckley’s cave, which was reputedly used by the renowned convict escapee William Buckley during his 32 years in the wilderness.

- Visit the cave of ‘Wild White Man’ Buckley. Escaped convict William Buckley lived 32 years with local Aborigines and reputedly sheltered in a cave under the lighthouse
- Walk the foreshore reserve along the Bass Strait surf beach
- Enjoy a coffee while watching the beach action at one the cafes along the esplanade.
