Coastal Art Trail

Point Nepean

The Coastal Art Trail celebrates the lives and work of the many notable Australian artists who have painted the coast. It features more than 50 artworks on 38 signboards along 17 kilometres of coastline. Walk, bicycle ride or skate along Port Phillip Bay from Brighton to Beaumaris.

The trail highlights works by Heidelberg School founders Tom Roberts, Arthur Streeton and Frederick McCubbin, who painted during summer camps in the years between 1886 and 1907. Many other artists such as Arthur Boyd, Clarice Beckett and CA Wilson and Jessie Traill followed in the footsteps of the Heidelberg School painters in painting ‘en plein air’ (outdoors).

Signboards are located as close as possible to where the artists set up their easels over 100 years ago, giving you a glimpse of the landscapes that inspired their paintings.

To get there drive 20 minutes from the CBD of Melbourne via Beach Road towards Frankston and park in the foreshore car parks marked B1–B9. Alternatively, take a train from Flinders Street station in the Melbourne CBD along the Sandringham line to Middle Brighton, Brighton Beach, Hampton or Sandringham Station.
