Maldon

Maldon main street

Maldon is a charming goldmining town that looks like it still belongs to the 19th century. The old weatherboard homes, solid stone buildings and decorative shopfronts are undoubtedly the best preserved example of an Australian gold mining town. In 2006, Maldon was awarded the ‘most intact heritage streetscape’ by the National Trust.

Today, the historic streets are lined with cafés, restaurants, galleries, antique and speciality stores. Unearth a treasure in one of the many antique shops, discover homewares, books, both new and second hand and beautiful imported lace.

Tour the surrounding countryside on board a steam-era train with the Victorian Goldfields Railway or take a drive up Mt Tarrangower and get a 360 degree view of the area from the lookout tower. Alternatively follow the Taste of Gold food and wine trail and sample local wines and produce from farmgates and cellar doors along the way.
