From the rallies on the goldfields, through to the raising of the Rebels’ Flag (the Southern Cross), the attack on the ill-defended stockade (3 December 1854) and the subsequent treason trials, Eureka is a story of a group of diggers from around the world who defended their rights, took concerted action, won public acclaim and helped build Australian democracy.
To mark the 151st anniversary, a range of related but distinct activities have been planned. The program provides a contemporary view of the themes and legacy of Eureka, exploring its relevance to today (democracy, cultural diversity and Australian identity). Events include: the Dawn commemoration, Diggers March, the Dawn Lantern Walk, the Stockade Picnic also 'Reflections of Eureka' a free exhibition at The Eureka Centre.Programetail: www.eurekaballarat.com
