Cohuna

- Population approximately 1,979
- 265 kilometres north-east of Melbourne.
Cohuna is situated on the Murray Valley Highway, between Echuca and Kerang, and is a bustling township with a strong commercial centre. The picturesque main street is situated opposite the Gunbower Creek, which forms Gunbower Island – a large and forested island supporting a diverse system of native animals and birds.
Activities and attractions
- Drive through Gunbower Island State Forest, a 65,000 acre flood plain that is internationally recognised as a wetland of significance for its importance to bird life, native mammals and amphibians
- Drift on the waters of Safes Lagoon, a 5 kilometre canoe trail that takes you past the waterbirds, wildlife and aquatic plants of Gunbower Island
- Visit the Cohuna Historical Society housed in the former Scots Church and containing memorabilia of the district, including a portion of the tree marked by Major Mitchell during his Australia Felix expedition. The museum’s archives centre holds an interesting collection of local records, including a photographic collection
- Picnic at the Torrumbarry Weir at the south-east end of the Gunbower State Forest. Restful and scenic, Torrumbarry Weir is also an ideal place to enjoy boating, fishing, camping and bushwalking
- Tee off at Cohuna’s picturesque 18-hole golf course on Gunbower Island – set amongst magnificent red gums – where the talents of Murray River ambassador and international golfer Stuart Appleby were fostered
- Play a game of bowls at the Cohuna Bowling Club.

How to get there
Cohuna is under 3.5 hours from Melbourne. Travel via Bendigo on the Calder Highway then follow the Loddon Highway to Kerang, turning off onto the Murray Valley Highway towards Cohuna.
