H1N1 Influenza 09 (Human Swine Flu)
Human cases of a new form of influenza virus have been identified in Australia.
While Victoria has a number of reported cases, our local tourism industry is open for business and continues to welcome travellers from around the world.
Australia has very good disease monitoring and control systems to detect and respond to outbreaks of illness. Melbourne Airport is working closely with federal agencies on border protection measures and the identification and follow-up of cases.
Quarantine and treatment is in place for affected people and flu clinics are open across Melbourne. It is important to remember that the symptoms people are experiencing are relatively mild.
Health authorities say there is no general need to wear face masks in Australia.
One of the most effective ways to protect you from the flu (seasonal or pandemic) is to practise good personal hygiene. This includes washing hands regularly, covering your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, and staying a distance of at least one metre from unwell people.
Follow health professionals' advice about quarantining or limiting social contact. If you have flu symptoms, you may consider not travelling to work, to limit the impact on colleagues.
