Grampians Wine Region

Best's Wines

The wines of Best's Great Western have been made under the watchful eye of the Thompson family for five generations. The original location at Concongella was established in 1866, and this sense of history pervades the experience when you visit. The wines have been consistently good performers over the years, and the shiraz in particular is a star.

The Dam at Kimbarra

Kimbarra Wines

The Kimbarra vineyard is located 4km east of Great Western in prime vineyard country, and the cellar door is on the main highway in the city of Ararat. Winemaking is under the direction of Ian McKenzie, the legendary winemaker who presided over the large Seppelt winery up the road at Great Western. Its a recipe for success, and the riesling and shiraz are excellent wines, right up to the very high regional standard.

Montara Winery

Montara Winery

Cruise up the entrance avenue, through Montaras imposing gates, and head up to the quaint, old-worldy cellar door. Sit on the verandah to take in the dappled, ever-changing landscape towards the Pyrenees and the Sleeping Princess ranges. This is one of the best views from any Victorian winery. Specialities are pinot noir, riesling and sauvignon blanc

Mount Langi Ghiran

Mount Langi Ghiran

Mount Langi Ghiran is in many ways the shiraz of the region, if not of Australia: intense, textured, a little brooding, and so complex as to bring a smile to the face of the most hardened wine bore. The cellar door commands a magnificent view east over the vineyards, nestled, as it is, at the foot of a rugged mountain range.

Seppelt Great Western

Seppelt Great Western

The original vineyard was established in 1865, and in the last century more than three kilometres of underground tunnels were dug by miners for sparkling wine maturation. Two real jewels here are the complex and intriguing Show Sparkling Shiraz and the polished and integrated St Peters Shiraz. Both from St Peters Vineyard, they proudly and loudly proclaim their Great Western origin.
