| It's hard for a venue to stand out on Chapel Street, with the over-abundance of loud fashion stores, thumping bars, high-class restaurants and sidewalk cafes. What is refreshing about Kazbar is that it doesn't really make an effort to out-market competitors with blaring music, fad food or a trendy facade. This isn't to say that it's not a stylish cafe; the gigs' posters, alfresco seating with wrought-iron chairs and tables, the purple shade cloth and warm wooden frontage are understated and inviting.
The food is simple and classic too, based around interesting variations on the staple pastas, pizza and risotto, as well as salads and a soup of the day. Try the duck risotto, prawn linguine, fusilli with mushroom or the Kazburger - a rich beef pattie with salad and fries. A visit for breakfast offers the usual selection of fry-ups, porridge, muesli and BLTs, or you can stop by for a quiet afternoon coffee and dessert of banana pancakes, Bavarian chocolate mousse, lemon tart or panna cotta.
