| Tiny and romantic, Libertine is not really the flamboyant rebel that its name implies. Instead, it is much more like an elegant, middle-aged French woman, seductive in her innate sophistication. Without labouring further over this metaphor, Libertine is an intimate, Frenchified little restaurant, coated in dark wood, chandeliers and wall-mounted mirrors that conjure up a Parisian bistro feel. Both the food and wine benefit from the practiced experience of the owners, and create a complete, three-dimensional dining experience. Formerly of Ezard, Zoe Ladyman applies her skills as a sommelier to an excellent wine list (which conveniently includes several half bottles). Complementing the wine (and vice versa), chef Nick Creswick's seasonal menu is packed with French-influenced dishes, but always remains subtly creative. A rich duck cassoulet might share menu space with lighter seafood dishes - dexterously cooked and arranged delicately, with a minimum of intrusive flavours. Chef: Nick Creswick |
