The Cannibal Creek winery is in the attractive Gippsland hinterland north of the M1 freeway. Here, broad meadows with pockets of trees and forest give a timeless pastoral feel, and the impression is reinforced by Cannibal Creeks country-style corrugated iron buildings. The proprietors are very friendly and wine quality is outstanding with some of the best chardonnay, sauvignon blanc and pinot noir in the region. The estate also functions as a place to learn the artisan foodie arts, like how to build your own wood-fired pizza oven. Ralph Kyte-Powell

Owen Schmidt is yet another Gippsland vigneron leading the quality chardonnay and pinot noir charge. The chardonnay combines buttery and nutty flavours with a steely, citric backbone; the pinot noir can be full and well-textured, showing a bit of gaminess; and the shiraz will enamour itself to lovers of this variety when grown in a cool climate: it is peppery but meaty, with a soft fruit finish and real terroir. Narkoojee is an isolated vineyard nestled among the eucalypts on the northern side of the broad La Trobe Valley. In the far distance the Loy Yang power station contrasts to the quiet pastoral beauty hereabouts. Birdsong fills the air and the atmosphere is fresh and invigorating. The wines made here number among Gippslands best with fine, complex chardonnay and one of Australias best merlots heading the range. Local Gippsland cheese plates are available as harmonious companions to the wines. Ralph Kyte-Powell

Its hard to meet a keen wine drinker who either doesnt love, or at least admire, Nicholson Rivers Chardonnay, considered by many pundits to be one of Australias greatest - and its from a tiny little place on Victorias east coast near Lakes Entrance. It shows intensity and power but with an emphasis on structure, rather than fruity-tutiness. Crop levels are low here, and Bass Strait
often gives this area a real blast, but Nicholson River happily soldiers on. Pinot Noir is well worth a second taste here too. Ben Canaider

Ramsay's vineyard enjoys a prime hillside location with great balcony views of Westernport Bay and French Island. While you're soaking up the scenery take time to wander through the garden which features around 350 different varieties of beautiful, fragrant roses. The range of distinctive wines not surprisingly includes a refreshing rosé, along with good cabernet sauvignon. Ralph Kyte-Powell

In the heart of Gippslands fertile dairy country, Wild Dog is a lovely place to visit. A long tree-lined driveway leads down through rich farmland, grazing cows, and tree-topped hills to the winery and cellar door. A new restaurant takes advantage of the superb views with large windows and a generously proportioned outdoor deck area, while a wetlands environment is being developed for visitors to stroll through. Its excellent white wine country with chardonnay and riesling the highlights, but shiraz is evolving in quality as the vineyard matures. Ralph Kyte-Powell
