Aboriginal history in the Great Ocean Road

Worn Gundidj tour at Tower Hill

Aboriginal people lived in this region for tens of thousands of years and evidence of their unique lifestyles are still present.

Find out more about aboriginal culture at Narana Creations in Geelong. Bush food, boomerang throwing and didgeridoo playing complement the large range of Aboriginal art and craft works available and the Aboriginal cultural interpretation centre also has a fascinating garden filled with medicinal plants and trees.

Tower Hill nestled inside an extinct volcano near Warrnambool is a site of significance for the Gunditjmara people. Walk and talk with a local guide and get an aboriginal perspective about flora, fauna, bush survival and medicinal practices.

Another site worth visiting is Lake Condah, near Portland. It was recently granted National Heritage listing due to evidence of a permanent Aboriginal village. Take a tour with an aboriginal  guide and see the remains of stone houses and fishing traps used by the original inhabitants of the area.
