7 October: Spring Racing

Postcards Logo

This week on Postcards we celebrate the start of Victoria's Spring Racing Carnival at the Caulfield and Moonee Valley racetracks. Glen spends a day in the life of champion jockey Damien Oliver, Esther dresses up for Spring Racing and takes a tour of Moonee Valley with Giaan Rooney, Lawrence brushes up on some filly and fashion history at the Australian Racing Museum and Bridget is trackside at Caulfield.

Caulfield Racetrack

Caulfield Racetrack
Join Bridget as she is taken on a guided tour of Caulfield and learns that this year marks the 130th running of the BMW Caulfield Cup. Racing on the Caulfield track began back in 1876 and it was three years later that the first Caulfield Cup was run, the Caulfield Guineas followed in 1881. Both races are still celebrated today come Spring Racing Carnival. A day of racing at Caulfield starts as early as 5am when ground staff arrive. As dawn turns into day, punters start arriving to place their bets and enjoy the many facilities on offer.

Damien Oliver

Damian Oliver
Of all the champions to forge a name for themselves in the sport of kings, there is one who epitomises what we all know as true Aussie spirit. Damien Oliver has one of the biggest names in Australian racing and the whole country rode with him back in 2002 when he won the Melbourne Cup on a 6 year old chestnut gelding named Media Puzzle. Join Glen as he spends a day in the life of Damien Oliver. You can catch Damien Oliver at all the Major race meetings over the Spring Racing carnival, where he'll be working hard to add to his winning total.

Australian Racing Museum

Australian Racing Museum
Rather than head out to Flemington, Caulfield or Moonee Valley, Loz decided to spend a day at the Australian Racing Museum at Federation Square. The museum has had its permanent home in Federation Square since 2004. As an added bonus, Loz was lucky enough to speak with the Patron of the Hall of Fame, Mr Roy Higgins, who rode over 2300 winners in his career including two Melbourne Cup Winners. The Australian Racing Museum is currently featuring an exhibit of race day fashion from leading designers and milliners and has loads of interesting artefacts and interactive displays.

Crown Promenade

Crown Promenade Hotel
Style is one word you'll hear quite a lot when it comes to Crown. After a very successful day at the races, Bridget continues her winning streak by having a lovely relaxing weekend at the very stylish inner city hotel, Crown Promenade. Join her as she searches for that perfect accessory and spends an evening with someone special, all under the one roof.

Moonee Valley

Moonee Valley
For Melbournians, the Spring Racing Carnival means horses, betting and fashion. Join Esther as she dresses up for Spring Racing and takes a tour of Moonee Valley with Giaan Rooney. They discover that when it comes to racing fashion the three most important things are this season's must have dress, a pair of killer heels that won't kill your feet and of course a hat. What better place to let the fillies out of their starting gates than in Melbourne, the country's fashion capital. Australia on Collins located on Melbourne's swanky style mile, is most certainly your one stop shop for all race day accessories.
