One of my best Melbourne experiences was completely unplanned and unexpected - which may be why it was so memorable.
We were on our way to Melbourne (from Sydney via Canberra) when the friend we were staying with called to say she wouldn't be able to host us as she'd put her back out.
Once we arrived in Canberra we booked a last-minute hotel for our arrival the following day - The Rendezvous - and checked in to a complimentary shuttle bus, a room upgrade and a bottle of wine!
After visiting our friend, we managed to cram Vic Markets (breakfast), Acland Street, Luna Park, St. Kilda beach (lunch), Chapel Street, Crown Casino (dinner) into our shortest Melbourne break ever!
While there's always lots to do and places to see and the city offers so much culture and vibracy (not to mention amazing public transport), it's always the people that make trips to Melbourne so fantastic and I can't wait to get back down there!
