We have found a wonderful outing for a sunny Sunday in Melbourne. Take tram No 16 from the city to St.Kilda beach, travelling down tree lined St.Kilda Road to the bottom of Fitzroy Street. Number One Fitzroy serves a good espresso overlooking the bay. Then a wander along the Promenade craft market where all stalls are operated by the craft people themselves. After this walk along St. Kilda pier to catch a ferry to Williamstown on the other side of Port Philip bay. This trip takes about 20 minutes and there are good views of the city as you cross. The naval presence at Williamstown is reminiscent of Devonport Auckland. Situated right beside the wharf at Williamstown is Pelicans Landing, a great place to have a drink and meal while overlooking the bay or a wander round the village shops and along the waterfront. On some Sundays there is a market with entertainment in the Williamstown gardens across the road. The trip back to Melbourne can be taken on one of the many ferries, which travel up the Yarra River to Southgate in the CBD. This trip takes about 45 minutes as the ferry wends its way past cargo ships berthed at various docks along the way. Passing under the low bridges which cross the Yarra is quite an experience especially at high tide. There are a number of stops along the way. If you wish to stroll along Southgate you can get off the ferry at the Exhibition Building wharf.
