Start off your day at Volley (cnr Balmain & Walnut St, Cremorne, http://melbournegastronome.blogspot.com/2008/08/hidden-cafe-volley-cremorne.html). Enjoy a leisurely breakfast, then stroll to Church St to catch the 70 tram (using your oh-so-convenient Metcard) to Flinders St.

Spend some time browsing the wonderful second-hand bookstores, including the wonderful Kay Craddock -- Antiquarian Bookseller (The Assembly Hall, 156 Collins Street) before settling down to lunch at a little Italian restaurant called Il Tempo on Degraves St (between Flinders Lane and Flinders St http://www.thatsmelbourne.com.au/DiningandNightlife/Restaurants/CasualDining/Pages/1991.aspx). During the week they have a lunch special where you can get two courses and a glass of wine for $20. If you feel like indulging, this place is well worthwhile!

Then move down to Don't Come gallery and store (http://www.dontcome.com.au/) on Level 2 of the Royal Arcade, 314 Little Collins St ( go up the narrow stairs next to the cafe) where you can find some of the most interesting and up-to-the-moment fashion labels including Schwipe T's, Dr Denim, and Uh Oh. Then you can pop across to the GPO for the rest of your fashion shopping!

After shopping, stroll up to Wunderkammer (http://www.wunderkammer.com.au) at 439 Lonsdale St to gaze in awe at the wonders on sale, including fossils, fine instruments, ephemera and other marvels.

Conclude your day by moving on to Pony (68 Little Collins Street). With a motto of "shout 'til you're a little horse", and "Rockin' 'til 7:00am) you can settle down for a serious let off of steam. It’s a narrow 2 story place which has comfy couches and relaxing areas downstairs and local live bands playing original music upstairs and DJ’s playing tunes after the bands finish.

I went to the Pony for the first time the other night and I'm sorry but its the last place that I would recommend to the general public. Great for some no doubt but there were broken glasses strewn on the floor, the 'comfy couches' were all sticky, upstairs smelt distinctly like a urinal.

this entry is nothing more than free commercial advertising and I guess that is ok but that's what it is
