Up at no 123 Lygon street is a Pizzeria called Mercadante. We had just finished a magnificent meal the waitress convinced us that we should really try the chocolate pizza. I was a bit reluctant, it didn't sound too good, but it was fantastic. I have been trying to duplicate it at home ever since. The next time we went overseas (to Greece) we stopped in Melbourne for a couple of nights on the way home to get over our jet lag. We walked up to Lygon Street only to find that, because it was ANZAC day, the place was booked out. No matter; we went back up at lunch time the following day and had a very small lunch just so we could fit the chocolate pizza in. The chef came out to see who the mad New Zealanders were who came especially to Melbourne for his chocolate pizza and then proceeded to tell us that he was out of Nutella (a principal ingredient apparently). He however said he would do us a special one with peanut butter and pickle, at this stage we realised he was having us on and sure enough a few minutes later the pizza that we had remembered from last time appeared. Ever since then, when any body we know from NZ is heading to Melbourne we always make a point of telling them that they must visit Mercadante and have their truly wonderful chocolate pizza.
