Amid the bush of Gunbower, some six kilometres from the Murray River, sits the humble Gunbower Family Hotel. The McGillivrays run this rustic, unpretentious establishment, which was built back in the 1940s and bears no sign of losing its charm. This is the place to go if you're deadly serious about experiencing some of the best steaks in Victoria. As well as being a publican, Richard McGillivray is a butcher and farmer to boot. His herd of grass-fed Herefords and flock of Wiltshire horn sheep ensure that the chargrilled steaks and lamb chops are indeed fresh from the pastures. Surrounded by trees and overlooking a creek, the hotel is often frequented by outdoorsy types, from birdwatchers and photographers to canoeists and rock climbers.
