Fruit fly in Victoria

Fruit fly

Fruit fly is a serious issue for fruit growers in certain parts of Australia, including Victoria. The fly is considered the world's most damaging fruit pest, costing industries across the world millions of dollars each year to control and eradicate.

Please do not take banned fruit and vegetables across state borders or into Fruit Fly Exclusion Zones or Pest Free Areas in New South Wales, South Australia and Victoria.

Victoria's Greater Sunraysia Pest Free Area (SPFA) is located within an existing Fruit Fly Exclusion Zone.

Bin your banned items at roadside quarantine bins. These quarantine bins are clearly sign-posted.

Department of Primary Industries inspectors operate roadblocks in Exclusion Zones and Pest Free Areas. Inspectors can check your vehicle and confiscate banned fruit or vegetables.

You can be fined up to $5500 if you are found carrying banned fruit and vegetables.

Your cooperation when travelling in these areas of Victoria is greatly appreciated. Please help us to halt fruit fly migration and to protect the livelihood of our fruit growers.
