| New Gold Mountain is the slick sister bar of Chinatown stalwart Double Happiness and has taken the top bunk just upstairs. This secluded salon continues Melbourne's love affair with supposedly secret bars. Slip through the unmarked door (distinguished only by a red 21), sneak up the stairs and uncover this elegant cocktail bar. New Gold Mountain oozes quality, with rich verdant decor and a bar stocked to the rafters with top-shelf tipples. Take a global tasting tour, starting perhaps with a Suntory 12-year-old scotch from Japan, venturing on to a Booker's seven-year-old bourbon from the USA, or perhaps meandering towards the best G&T you'll ever try - made with Citadelle gin from France. For a serious kick-start to your night, try the No.3 cocktail made with Japanese plum wine, Jameson whiskey and Vietnamese mint. For a more relaxed tipple, saunter up one more level to the lounge. Secluded benches behind carved wooden screens, crimson lanterns and a crepe paper ceiling transport you to a colonial Shanghai opium den. There's table service upstairs, meaning guests don't have to venture from their nooks to enjoy the top-shelf material that NGM offers. If you're peckish, the bar staff can arrange some sensational yakitori or gyoza from nearby, delivered piping hot and fresh to your table.
