| Nestled in the folds of a hill, snowbanked in the winter, Tracker's Lodge has a certain retro-European feel. The restaurant's classy, timeless decor is complemented by the spectacular white-and-blue vista through huge windows overlooking the slopes. The waiters are well presented and seem to enjoy their jobs, unlike many of their city colleagues.
Dinner here is a seven-course degustation, which changes daily. For instance, braised lamb tartlets with horseradish cream are served with Grandin Brut as canapes. Jerusalem artichoke soup with sauteed wild mushrooms and mascarpone follows. A salad of rocket with citrus and pancetta, served with the excellent 2004 Brown Brothers Pinot Grigio, rounds out the beginning of this extravagant meal. A brief rhubarb and sweet vermouth sorbet cleanses the palate before the main course of braised rabbit with jus lie (2003 Leeuwin Estate Prelude Chardonnay is the recommended wine for this dish). A pan-fried sirloin supplanted by 2002 Penley Phoenix Cabernet is also available as a main. Dessert is a chocolate torte with cinnamon anglaise, followed by Mersey Valley cheddar with house-made quince paste.
