ADVENTURE
If it's mountain biking you're into, head for premium tracks spearing off into Victoria's rugged High Country. The region's popular tracks are also ideal for horse riding or four-wheel driving. In summer try white-water rafting on the Snowy River or kayaking in the Croajingolong National Park.
Rock climbers and abseilers should tackle the Grampians, especially the breathtakingly steep Mt Arapiles. Collectively, the region has 20 climbs graded 31 and over, so if you've got nine lives, there's plenty to challenge you. There are also walls for beginners to learn the ropes or try it out.
If you're in Melbourne, visit Hardware Lane in the CBD, where several outward-bound stores will give you the lowdown on the latest technology, routes, places to go and instructions on how best to set up a hanging belay.
