Mount Markey Winery - Cassilis. This small family owned micro Winery/Brewery in Cassilis is a former winner of a Lakes & Wilderness Tourism award. They are farm gate producers of Wine, Beer, Cider and Mead. Situated in historic Cassilis midway between Swifts Creek & Omeo on the scenic Winery & Goldfields drive, this is a Gem for visitors to the Omeo region. Mt Markey is no ordinary winery. Established in 1992 on the site of a small market garden with sly grog shops scattered about the gold mining townships it seemed fitting to produce small batches of estate grown produce which includes Mead, Beer and Cider as well as a range of table wines. The climate in Cassilis is the driest in Gippsland with warm to hot summers and being close to the Victorian Alps it's winters can be chilly. Its schistose free draining mineralized soils are fantastic for growing a wide variety of fruit ranging from grapevines, Elderberries, Plums, Apples and Pears to name a few and all on just 6 acres. The Winery also leases land adjacent to state forest so there is a good supply of honey for their popular organically grown fruit and honey mead. Visitors are welcome to their cellar door facilities where free tasting is available. The Omeo Region was the gathering place of pioneers and explorers and houses Australia's oldest and most original law and order museum where guided tours are available. Visitor Information is also available at Mt Markey Winery just a short scenic drive from Omeo. Mt Markey Winery is open from 10am to 5 pm 6 days a week. (Closed Tuesdays) Winter months: open during school holidays, other times by prior arrangement.
