| Naked Japan might sound like something you would find late at night on the international movie channel, but it's actually the name of a charming little Asian eatery on Victoria Avenue. This unassuming Japanese cafe, which has been operating for the past four years, has earned a loyal clientele and mentions in cheap eats guides for its dedication to providing affordable, quality cuisine that is prepared fresh and fast - all important keys to survival in an upmarket and competitive dining area like Albert Park.
A definite favourite of return customers is the ika itame - a lightly cooked calamari with garlic soy sauce. Also on offer are the usual array of sushi rolls and sashimi entrees such as gyusashi aalad (chargrilled lean beef with sweet spicy sashimi style sauces), or tori tatsuya (deep fried chicken marinated in citrus and ginger). There are plenty of vegetarian options such as tofu steak and kinoko bata mushroom stir-fry as well as noodles and tempura with udon or soba and donburi rice combinations. If you're after something more risque, order a naked bento box, tori shiso cheese katsu (crumbed chicken and cheese with shiso herbs) or chargrilled eel - but be warned that if green tea ice cream is not your top pick for dessert you may be left with frustrated sweet cravings. Now, in case you're still curious, the 'naked' in the name refers to chef Gima Kim's open kitchen policy where everything to do with the hot and steamy food preparations happens in full view of the diners, causing much anticipatory salivation.
