Bunjilaka is a word derived from two local Aboriginal languages meaning ‘creation place’ and is the name of the Melbourne Museum’s Aboriginal Centre. Developed after a lengthy consultation process, the Centre’s aim is to enable Victoria’s indigenous communities to express their history themselves. Bunjilaka’s significant collection of Aboriginal cultural heritage items is complemented by a series of performance, exhibition and meeting spaces including a native garden area. Even the Welcome (Wominjeka) Desk serves an important function as part of the customary greeting ritual when welcoming visitors to country.
