| Joining the growing throng of fresh and funky venues to hit the Northcote bar scene is the suave and sophisticated Debonair House. This place is ushering in a new level of cool, ranking high on the list of destinations for the cats and kittens who prowl the area looking for their next fix of smooth jazz and even smoother libations. They may come for the $4 pizza (6pm-8pm, Tuesday to Thursday), but they stay for the service... and the tapas... and the wine. Reclining in one of the many leather sofas, with a Winston Churchill in hand and toying lazily with a plate of chilli quail, pan-fried with garlic, it's easy to forget the mortgage you've committed to, the plasma TV repayments, or the children you've left in the car. Personally I couldn't think of a better place to empty your wallet or purse, especially when said place serves litre jugs of Staten Island iced tea. Debonair House is an elegant fusion of a European wine bar with a Spanish tapas house, albeit with higher food preparation standards. Don't forget to check out the Jazz Club, which offers live jazz from 9pm every Friday night. It's just what the doctor ordered. |
