| Since 1996, the City Lights Project has been taking dark alleys and turning them into galleries. Hosier Lane and a small alcove just off Centre Place are two of the best known sites where lightboxes installed along the laneway wall illuminate works by local and international artists. The latter spot is also well known for its prolific stencil graffiti. According to project creator and curator Andrew Mac, some 300,000 pedestrians view the works each week. Not even the Guggenheim gets that kind of traffic. Open rain or shine, 24–7; City Lights has certainly put Melbourne’s street art on the map.
