BUSES
Melbourne’s metro bus network services the same routes as trams, and many other destinations across town and accepts the same tickets used on trams and trains.
While it’s best to pre-purchase your ticket before travelling, some tickets may also be purchased onboard from the driver. For bus information, timetables and fares, visit Metlink.
The free Melbourne City Tourist Shuttle service follows a continuous circle between major attractions and key destinations.
Probably the most useful service for travellers is the NightRider. The after midnight bus service travels from the city to the suburbs, departing Swanston Street (between Collins and Flinders streets) hourly from 12.30am to 4.30am on Saturday and Sunday mornings, with connecting services to Crown Casino. Onboard public phones are available so you can call a taxi or a friend to collect you from the bus stop.
Buses also travel to outer regions, including Yarra Valley and the Dandenong Ranges, the Mornington Peninsula and the Great Ocean Road, but you’ll need to buy individual tickets for these journeys. For long-distance trips, tickets can be purchased from V/Line (ph 136 196) at Southern Cross Station.
If you're arriving in town by bus or train, some hostels offer a free pick-up service from bus, train or ferry terminals on request.
