| Is it the last remains of a long-gone civilisation? An omen warning us where our own society is headed? Or a challenge to skateboarders? Irrespective of how you see it, Petrus Spronk’s bluestone sculpture Architectural Fragment has become one of our favourite pieces of public art since its unveiling in 1993 as part of the Swanston Walk Public Art Project. Next time you walk down this busy thoroughfare, take the blinkers off for a moment and you’ll notice more examples. There’s more literal street art such as the ornate steel bench that’s a mini urban oasis, and three bronze businessmen waiting for a tram that never comes.
