Queen Victoria Market
The Queen Victoria Market is famous as the largest and oldest market in the Southern Hemisphere. Opened in 1878, its historic buildings are a natural heritage site and many of the shops from which the traders operate today, are unchanged from days gone by. The Dairy Hall is perhaps the best known with its distinctive shop fronts and its multicultural offerings in the 38 delicatessens that lie within its walls.
Adjacent to the Dairy Hall is the Fish and Meat Market which bustles with activity from early morning when the freshest of items are placed on display and the shoppers arrive to select Melbourne's finest quality produce at competitive prices. The fruit and vegetable section stretches across many of the sheds and the addition of the Organic Market has fulfilled the needs of those who relish naturally grown produce. From carrots to cherries and honey to eggs, you’ll find it all here.
There is plenty of general merchandise available including fashion items at reasonable prices, souvenirs for international and interstate visitors plus everything from suitcases to saucepans. The sounds of buskers and entertainers are part of the atmosphere and on Sundays one of the streets is sealed off to traffic allowing pedestrians to wander at will between all sections of the market whilst enjoying a mouth watering array of casual food and a variety of live entertainment.
