State Library of Victoria

The State Library
The State Library is one of Victoria's greatest assets and houses some of our most treasured historical artefacts including John Batman's Melbourne Deed, Hoddle's chain, with which he measured out Melbourne and Ned Kelly's famous Jerilderie Letter and his death mask. Although you may not know it, the library also has a long and colourful history as a haunted building. There are more than two million books in the State Library of Victoria, but can you guess which is the most requested?

Postcards: Old Melbourne Gaol

Old Melbourne Gaol Tour
The Old Melbourne Gaol is Victoria's oldest surviving prison and, until it closed its doors in 1929, was home to some of Victoria's most hardened criminals. The night tour includes an unnerving description of what some of the prisoners on death row had done to deserve such a penalty. Hangman tours run four nights a week and are the perfect way to explore the imposing interior of the gaol at night when it would normally be locked and left to the restless souls within.

Postcards: Princess Theatre

Princess Theatre & Phantom of the Opera
Of all the beautiful theatres we have in Melbourne, the Princess Theatre would most certainly have to be the jewel in the crown. Over the years it has been home to Mamma Mia, The Sound of Music and Phantom of the Opera. Phantom of the Opera is one of the world's most loved musicals and has played in 25 countries in 124 cities around the world. It last played in Australia between 1990 and 1998 and sold more than 1.5 million tickets in Melbourne alone. On 19 July this year, the phantom will return to haunt our city.

Postcards: Theatre Royal

Theatre Royal
The theatre royal is the oldest continually running movie cinema in Australia at more than 150 years old. It had its humble beginning as a canvas tent in 1854 entertaining central Victorian gold diggers. The theatre also has a resident ghost. Andrew Mortimer is his name. Andrew was the chief auctioneer here in the gold digging days when the theatre was used as the local auction house seems as though he still thinks he owns the stage.
