| Bar Open serves more than just beer. It should really be called Bar/Bandroom/Cinema/Gallery Open. Sure, the courtyard and the open fireplaces are charming enough, but clamber upstairs and you'll discover the gallery, which is home to an eclectic, permanent collection of artworks, as well as other transient, blink-and-you'll-miss-it exhibitions cobbled together by local artists. At night, from Thursdays through to Sundays, bands plug in their amps, and belt out their live sounds, transforming the upstairs zone into a gig space, where crowds can dance. Expect to hear anything from ska and hip hop to jazz and rock - and the best part is it's often free entry. Monday nights are reserved for 'Screen Sect', a weekly event dedicated to 'rarely seen, obsessively loved and criminally neglected cult classics of cinema.' Bar Open also holds a monthly event called Babble, which revolves around poetry, spoken word and open mic rhymes. Entry is $5. Arty and bohemian at heart, Bar Open is popular with students and grungy types, who crave open-forum entertainment along with their pots of Guinness.
