Bird life – Mornington Peninsula

Western Port Bay wetlands

The Mornington Peninsula is home to hundreds of species of birds including kookaburras, magpies, eagles, parrots, cockatoos, finches, rosellas, brolgas, swans, pelicans, gulls, terns, ducks, geese and albatross; all of which can be seen in the national parks or public gardens such as the Briars.

Visit the region to watch birds at well known viewing areas including the Coolart Wetlands and French Island.

Coolart Wetlands

More than 170 bird species have been recorded in the wetlands. In winter and spring the spectacle of 1,000 ibises living and breeding on Coolarts lagoon is a sight not to be missed. The woodland walk reveals more of the native wildlife, including koalas, echidnas and ringtail possums. Coolart has excellent picnic and barbecue facilities. An admission fee applies.

French Island

French Island National Park

There are a total of 234 bird species living on French Island, including 15 birds of prey such as the brown falcon, whistling kite and swamp harrier. The island is also home to a pair of white breasted sea eagles. During the migration season from September to April, there are 31 varieties of migratory birds that visit the island, including royal spoonbills, egrets and lapwing plovers.
