| Little Thai Princess is a petite and very fragrant place that is perpetually packed with eager diners, seated expectantly at the elegantly set tables, between vases of flowers and enormous Buddha paintings. The eatery is operated by a team who spent five years at Glenferrie Road's esteemed Thai Princess. The menu is pan-Asian with an emphasis, of course, on Thai flavours. The menu ranges from generic favourites such as spring rolls and tom yum, to the signature seua rong hai (aka the crying tiger beef salad) - slices of rare grilled beef drizzled with lime and mixed with sticky rice and a spicy dressing. Also popular is the southern Thai massaman beef curry, which blends tender beef, curry paste, potatoes and roasted peanuts, with a definite hint of star anise.
Too often restaurants will slip from an authentic regional menu to simple ice cream when it comes to dessert - but here again the dishes provide a continuation of the authentic cuisine. Recipes range from kluay buad chee, a steamed banana pudding with coconut milk and palm sugar; to khao neow dam, a sweet black sticky rice pudding with syrupy lychees, toasted coconut flakes and coconut caramel sauce. |
