Deniliquin
Quick facts
- Population approximately 8,500
- 292 kilometres north-east of Melbourne
- Home of the Peppin Heritage Centre.
Deniliquin is situated on the Edward River, in the centre of Riverina sheep station country and on the edge of the world's largest red gum forest. A series of lagoons with sandy beaches flowing off the river are located in parkland and state forest, and are popular places for fishing, waterskiing, canoeing, boating, safe swimming, and relaxing.
The town is also renowned for its place in the history of development of the Australian wool industry. It was here that the Peppin family bred a sturdier merino sheep (immortalised in a bronze statue), a new breed that could stand up to harsh conditions. Go to the Peppin Heritage Centre to learn about the history of the Australian wool industry.
