Testimony to Melbourne's multiculturalism is the fact great Chinese food can be found in the heart of Lygon Street's Little Italy. Family owned by five-star Hong Kong chef, Sam Siu, Newland offers super-friendly service and a welcoming vibe along with generous serves at a reasonable price. Siu's emphasis is on healthy Asian cuisine with entrees ranging from sesame prawns, lemon chicken, Cantonese fillet steak, roast pork and seafood hotpots to Hong Kong-style barbecue duck, chicken or pork with soy sauce served in lotus leaves and chilli. $48.80 tops the price for mains, but will get you a whole steamed duck stuffed with sticky rice, duck mince, ginger prawns, scallops, mushrooms, Chinese sausages and mandarin skin. Large ornamental fans deck the walls for a neat, clean decor, while outdoor seating for seafood lunch specials make this a popular spot with local workers and students. The wine list of 24 is not extensive but also on offer are a variety of ports, spirits, and Tsingtao, an imported Chinese beer.
