Buninyong Botanic Gardens

Rotunda, Buninyong Botanical Gardens

Buninyong is nestled at the base of Mt Buninyong, a dramatic extinct volcano with a classic cone. Buninyong was one of the first inland towns in Victoria, and one of the first places gold was discovered in 1851.

The gardens form part of a picturesque historic precinct that includes the still-active 1853-58 catholic church, the 1858 former court house, the 1859 former police station, the 1854-55 former Buninyong Brewery, and the still-active bowling club that dates back to 1872.

The gardens consist of two sections, the upper gardens centre around The Gong, a small lake overlooked by the catholic church. The picturesque lower gardens include an unusual lattice rotunda, built in 1901, an ornamental pool with an island, and a garden behind the walls of an old swimming pool.
