At first, the grandiose space, the sloping, cavernous ceilings and copious comfortable seats - all flanked by a Cadillac-sized stone hearth - capture the diner's imagination. Then, the menu, wine list and excellent service slowly bubble into consciousness. Chef Rachel Reed's local fare-inspired menu has garnered the restaurant a great reputation both on and off the mountain. For breakfast, thick fluffy pancakes supplanted with local mountain berries stave off the cold for many hours, while dinner presents a classic range of mod-Oz dishes, from local trout to roasted duck confit. Owner Wally, and his amicable family, love (and who wouldn't) living up here in the snow running one of the most beautiful lodges in Australia, and it shows in their warm hospitality. Everything has a touch, not rustic, but classic.
