| Wandering down the Spencer Street end of Collins Street can be a bleak adventure for gourmand crowds, but surprises await those with sharp eyes. An easily missed, thread-like alley by the name of Liberty Lane houses Choix in its day shadows and can be seen from afar by the trickle of people passing through it. Or, if you have a good nose, the smell of crepes cooking on circular stoves may also lead you to the lane. Choix is a creperie quickly gaining kudos not just among Melburnian crepe-lovers, but with anyone who hungers for the old-world charm of petite, dimly lit salons with private booths and sweet scents of breakfast cooking and coffee brewing. The drop-dead friendly staff can make you all manner of concoctions. To start, try a simple blend of free-range eggs, swiss cheese and parsley wrapped in carefully composed crepe dough or go for a sweet tried-and-true perennial, the crepe with lemon and sugar.
