Postcards Logo

After much anticipation the Spring Racing Carnival is about to take off. On This week the Postcards team gets into the racing spirit with a very special show. They visits Mooney Valley and the Caulfield Racecourse, then delve into the colourful history of racing at the Australian Racing Museum at Federation Square. Hotspots for shopping for that perfect Spring Racing outfit include Alannah Hill, Leona Edminston and the shops at Australia on Collins, are also featured.

Caulfield Racecourse

Caulfield Races
The Spring Racing Carnival is always a great time to be in Melbourne and for Suzie there is no better place to attend the races than at Caulfield. The famous track is home to The Age Caulfield Guineas next Saturday 11 October and the BMW Caulfield Cup on 18 October. Beautiful clothes, matching hats, bags and shoes this is one of our most important seasons on the fashion calendar in Victoria. Suzie caught up with two of Caulfields Classic Style Ambassadors jeweller Adrian Lewis and elegant race-goer Clover Lee-Steere. From fashion to horses, Suzie went on to meet with strapper Mike Preston who was on the spot when his horse Maldivian was sensationally scratched at the start of last years Caulfield Cup. Another important job trackside is that of the trainer and we chatted to Tony Vasil whose horse Elvstroem won the Caulfield Cup in 2004. Okay, shed learnt about style, had an insight into the life of a strapper and met a trainer the next thing on the list was to catch up with a couple of Channel Nine stable mates, Blair McDonough and Lauren Newton to finish off the day with a glass of bubbly.

Racing Museum

Racing Museum & Men's Fashion
Spring racing fever is sweeping across Victoria for another year and its a little hard not to get caught up in all the excitement. Amongst the parties, marquees, food, wine and fillies there might even be a few horse races. If youre heading to the track you want to make sure youre looking good and know what youre talking about, so Glen set out to find a smart suit and brush up on his racing knowledge. He headed to Melbournes GPO where he got some personal style tips at Arthur Galan. Once the suit was sorted it was off to the Racing Museum to catch up on the sports history. To give Glen a head start on all things racing he caught up with Dr Andrew Lemon, author of The History of Australian Thoroughbred Racing Volume 3. Another person who knows a thing or two about the industry is Racing Victoria and Australian Racing Museum Events Coordinator, Emma Freedman, who gave Glen a few final tips to bring him out in front this spring racing carnival.

Spring Racing Fashion

Ladies Fashion
It's that time of year again, when the fashionista's are off and racing. Race wear becomes its own colourful sport and the fashion frivolity that seizes Melbourne trackside is truly spectacular. A day at the races is the perfect excuse for us ladies to frock up. Alannah Hill is bursting at the seams with styles that are hot to trot. The Chadstone store is like a Pandoras Box of goodies - there are pretty flowers, frills, feathers, beads, buttons, lace and just general girly gorgeousness. Next up to the barrier is Leona Edmiston, where every day is ladies day. This frock Queen clearly knows a few things about gowns. Not only are they colorful and striking they are timeless pieces that will stay in your wardrobe forever. With back to back winners in the outfit stakes it was time to hit Australia on Collins for some last minute race day essentials and it is just the place to go to get you across the winning post.

Moonee Valley

Moonee Valley
Blairs track of choice is Moonee Valley. The Valley as its known by the regulars is home to the Cox Plate, a race which prides itself as the one where legends are made. Its where the big red, the red terror, the peoples champion - yes Phar Lap himself won the Cox Plate on the very same turf. Last year that same honour went to El Segundo who was ridden by jockey Luke Nolan, and by a stroke of luck the day Blair was there, so was he, so Blair tracked him down for a chat. When it came time to back a winner Blair asked Postcards own fine filly Brodie Harper, ambassador for Moonee Valley, for her tips. Although Brodie believes it's all in the name Blair wasnt convinced and went searching for an expert. He found bookmaker Lisa Eskander who is not only one of the very few women in the business but one of the best. Even if you have your blinkers on when it comes to finding a winner you can bet each way that youll have a great day at Moonee Valley.
