| Griff is officially Melbourne's pimpest dog. Not only did his owner hang a painting of him in his pub, he also named the whole place after him. But while Griff sounds like a pretty savvy canine, there's little chance of him understanding the magnitude of this honour so it's up to the rest of Melbourne to do his legacy proud. The new-look Griffs Hotel has cast off the shackles of the Purple Turtle (its previous incarnation), stuck a bit of gel in its hair and stepped out in style with a menu that provides loads of lip-smacking share dishes for you to get down and dirty with. Griffs' attitude towards nosh is refreshing: serve fab meals matched with a host of wines by the glass so that everyone can access wine culture and not feel as though their purse has been molested. Sounds great, sign me up. Modern Australian is the order of the day, with the spanking new menu providing hearty dishes such as braised rabbit and foie gras pithivier. The dining area is divided into sections, with a medieval table in the cellar thrown in for good measure and upstairs available for private shindigs.
Managing to walk the walk, Griffs' schmick decor and polished ambience is certainly out to make a lasting impression and will no doubt get the pub aficionados of Fitzroy talking a very different talk.
