The Age Good Weekend Review, 52 Weekends Away. October 30, 2004
It was the nicest phone call of my whole week. Chris, our host-to-be, was phoning ahead to ask what we'd prefer for breakfast on Saturday morning. Eggs and all the doings, or pancakes and fruit? Were we tea or coffee people? And what about dinner? How did an eggplant stack with goat's cheese and roasted vegies sound? So it was with mouths watering that we joined the Friday afternoon exodus from the city and headed for gold country, near Castlemaine. Guildford is a pretty town, with one pub, one shop and a scattering of houses, and on the hill above all this sits Celestine House. The Cottage, adjacent to the main house, was perfect for a relaxed and indulgent weekend that managed also to be child friendly. The interior is pretty and fresh, with big windows and a private garden from which to look out over green hills. The king-sized spa was a big hit with young and old. Our hosts were friendly and attentive without intruding on our family time. But the highlight of our stay at Celestine House was the food. As we lazed by the fire on a wet afternoon, thinking about a walk but not getting up, a gentle knock at the door put an end to any thought of activity. It was Chris, just wondering if we felt like homemade scones with a big pot of tea. Who could resist? And later, opting to dine in at the Cottage, it was as though we had a private chef. The table was set a few minutes before dinner; the fire nicely stoked; and dinner, when it arrived, was as delicious as it was plentiful. And best of all, the dirty dishes disappeared as if by magic CLARE KERMOND
