The Castlemaine State Festival is a ten day explosion of the arts, as the town's streets, parks and historic buildings come alive with the sights and sounds of hundreds of artists.

Previous years have seen a program packed with an extraordinary array of events including; outdoor streetscapes, musicals, theatre performances, art and produce markets, visual arts biennial including open studios and exhibitions, children and youth events, literature and poetry, comedy, cabaret, jazz, contemporary and classical music.

Audiences in excess of 50,000 add to the vibrant spirit of the festival, as Australian and international performers and companies mix and mingle with regional communities and audiences, to create a truly celebratory and festive spirit.

Set amongst the unique central Victorian landscape, venues include historic churches and theatres, mines and quarries, public and private gardens. The Castlemaine State Festival is Victoria's key regional arts festival and the premier arts event for Mount Alexander Shire.

Local directions

Castlemaine is 1.5 hours drive from Central Melbourne and 40 minutes from Bendigo, 20 minutes from Daylesford. V/Line trains run direct from Spencer Street to Castlemaine, and buses run from Melbourne International Airport. The festival takes place in and around the centre of the town of Castlemaine and surrounds at various indoor and outdoor venues.
