Located high up in the Victorian snowfields and bounded by the picturesque Alpine village of Dinner Plain, the arrival of the seasons first snow is signal to the Altitude 5000 Sled Dog Group to step up preparation for their spectacular Sled Dog Challenge.
This annual event showcases the top dogs of sled dog racing in Australia and is unique in being the first Australian snow-based race of its kind. More than 75 Mushers and over 350 dogs are expected to compete at this year's event. The race is held over two days with times recorded on both days. Teams who successfully complete the course both days with combined fastest times are the winners.
This year, you can expect two, three, four and six dog teams and an exhilarating new eight dog team class.
Fans are welcome to meander through the 'Sled Dog Park' (race pits) - where all dog teams are housed, get up close with dog sleds and equipment, speak with Mushers and with owners permission pat or have their photo taken with their favourite dog team.
Other planned activities include freight sled pulling demonstrations, snow ball throwing and a snowman building competition for the kids. BBQ, hot chocolate and coffee stands, pumped competitors, presentation and celebration. All of this makes for a unique, colourful and exciting winter carnival.
Spectators are most welcome, but it is stressed that dogs not competing be left at home.
