Steve Baird had a rough introduction to the packhorse joining Clive Hodge, Tiger Ripper and Archie Timms on a re-enactment of the gold pack horse train from Walhalla to Rosedale for the Victorian Sesquicentennial celebration in 1984. The hard miles and big loads sparked a lifelong interest and Steve and Kath went on to form Bogong Horseback Adventures in 1986 and have offered packhorse tours into the Victorian High Country since.

Over that time the Baird's and their horses have covered about 552,000 kilometres, climbed about, worn out about 11,500 horse shoes, loaded about 11,500 pack loads, spent 1800 days on the track and 1400 nights in the swag.

The Baird blokes have judged the Pack Horse event at The Man From Snowy River competition for over 10 years. This Packing School has been developed to be informative and relevant to the horsemanship in the 21st century combined with the traditional heritage of the Australian pack horse.

Bogong Horseback Adventures has been running award winning tours since 1986. With licensed access to the Alpine National Park and Mount Bogong, the riding landscape is truly spectacular.

Based at out Spring Spur Stables, Bogong Horseback Adventures travel from rich mountain valleys to the vast Bogong High Plains and Victoria's highest mountain, Mount Bogong. The award winning tours combine, great food and wine, fantastic mountain bred horses and friendly, experienced staff.

With a range of tours from three days to seven days, Bogong Horseback Adventures can cater for riders of all levels of experience. Taking care to match horse and rider, we offer tuition to those who desire.

The Spring Spur stables, nestled below Victoria's highest mountain, are an ideal starting point to experience the best the High Country has to offer. The Bogong area of the Alpine National Park features the seven highest peaks in Victoria, vast rolling High Plains, dozens of historic huts, mobs of brumbies, fast flowing mountain rivers, spectacular displays of wildflowers, old goldmines and a network of mining and cattle tracks cut into mountain sides over 100 years ago.

The best way to experience this vast area, most of it inaccessible to four wheel drive, is to join one of the Packhorse supported tours. Continuing an unbroken tradition dating back to the 1860's, the team can take you on the journey of a lifetime.

Breeding and training Australian Stock Horses, Bogong Horseback Adventures have a program of clinics and workshops in Australian Horsemanship, offering insights into the traditions of mountain horse lore, natural horsemanship and the skills of bush riding, camping with horses and using packhorses.

Offering two hour, half day and full day rides in the Alpine Park from the Tawonga stables.
