Corpus Medicorum was founded in late 2001 by Royal Melbourne Hospital Cardiothoracic Surgeon and violist Phillip Antippa. Inspired by the Australian Doctors Orchestra, Corpus Medicorum is made up of doctors, medical students and other health professionals who play together to continue a fine tradition of regular music performance combined with raising funds for the Royal Melbourne Hospital. For 11 years, Corpus Medicorum has given three concerts per year in Melbourne and has grown from a string ensemble to a full-sized modern symphonic orchestra. Their new home is the highly acclaimed Melbourne Recital Centre and continues to grow its support from patients, the hospital community and the general public.Much of the Orchestras' success is owed to Christopher Martin who was its musical director and chief conductor since the orchestra's inception right up to his passing in 2011. Excellent programming, astute rehearsing, constant encouragement and striving for musical perfection were Chris's contribution to the orchestra and will remain his ever-lasting legacy. The aim of the orchestra is not only to provide musical excellence for clinicians, their medical community and patients but also to raise money for much needed equipment in Lung Cancer Services at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.
