The countdown is on to Australia's biggest ever football tournament - AFC Asian Cup Australia 2015.

The best 16 countries of Asia will compete for Asia's biggest sporting prize, the Asian Cup.

It will be a 32 game, 23 day festival of football with Melbourne playing host to seven games at Melbourne Rectangular Stadium, at Olympic Park.

The tournament will open in Melbourne with Australia taking on Kuwait on January 9, 2015. The opening game will also feature an Opening Ceremony.

Other games in Melbourne include a quarter-final plus five group matches involving past Asian Cup champions.

Melbourne will provide the stage for defending champions Japan and former champions Iran, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.

Between them they have won 11 of the 15 Asian Cups decided so far, so Melbourne will definitely be the "City of Champions".

The Asian Cup is held every four years and is the premier men's football competition throughout Asia.

It will be the biggest sporting event in Australia in a decade and the largest football tournament that Australia has hosted.

With a TV reach of over 2.5 billion people throughout Asia and viewed in 80 countries, Asian Cup 2015 will bring in about 45,000 overseas visitors to Australia.
